‘Ladies Who Lunch’ Visit The Metropolitan
One of Salt Lake’s most classic fine dining establishments, The Metropolitan, continues to serve quality food for lunch and dinner. A group of ladies and I, recently visited The Metropolitan, for lunch and found ourselves to be the only diners in the entire establishment. Though empty as it was, the food we ordered proved to be crowd worthy.
As the leaves are in their full glory in Salt Lake right now and the mountains are dusted in pure white color, I can’t help but crave fall flavors. Soups, grilled sandwiches, hot pasta, and warm drinks are a regular part of my daily caloric intake in the fall. There is just something about dipping my sandwich into a warm cup of soup that just warms my soul.
The day we dined at The Metropolitan at lunch, was a cool fall day. Most of us ordered some form of warm sandwich and soup. A few ordered the risotto special with meatballs. I enjoyed every bite of my mushroom panini, with fontina, sweet onion and spinach on caraway foccacia, along with a side of their house favorite sweet potato chips. Normally, I’m not a chip kind of gal but I’m telling you, these were good! So good, that I took home what I couldn’t finish at lunch. The sandwich was perfectly hot with the cheese fully melted. The mushrooms stole the show, with full flavor and heartiness.
The other gals raved about their grilled goat cheese sandwiches, served with pressed tomato soup. And those who ordered the daily risotto special enjoyed it but mentioned it was more rice like than risotto. I think the grilled sandwiches were the winners of our experience.
As we ate and enjoyed our lunch and got to know each other a bit more, we did start to wonder if this seemingly empty Salt Lake classic spot was going to survive all of the new restaurants opening around the area. We hope it does, and I hope the competition only drives them to be better and more inventive. After experiencing their lunch and dinner now, I can say I haven’t had anything that I didn’t really enjoy there. The flavors are robust and the service is friendly. I hope you will try for yourself!
Above all, we were glad to get together in person and enjoy a long lunch while catching up on each others lives. My type of lunch!!

I am one of the fortunate “Ladies Who Lunch” who dined that day. Lunch was enjoyable and tasty. It was sad to see the building nearly empty… aside from us but I always enjoy the Metropolitan.
