The Savory Palate, an Art Institute Dining Experience in Salt Lake
Did you know that you can eat lunch at The Art Institute in Salt Lake? A fun experience, you can help the students out as they practice their newly learned skills. From an awkward waitress to experimental foods, coming to lunch at a culinary school in Salt Lake is quite an adventure. Don’t expect perfection, but to expect to laugh a little and enjoy a good meal on the cheap. 3 courses for $12.
We walked through the school lobby and up the stairs to a small dining room. I felt like we were in a test kitchen and we were about to enter into a reality TV show where someone might get kicked off if they didn’t perform well in the kitchen that day. We couldn’t wait to see the menu and get a glimpse at what they were creating for us.
Our lunch started with a chilled aparagus soup which I loved. It was topped with crème fraiche and raw asparagus. We were also served fresh-made focaccia and hummus as an appetizer.
There were a couple of choices for entrees. I chose the chicken with seasonal vegetables and farro. There was also a salmon entree which looked pretty tasty as well.
There were three choices for dessert. I chose the mango sorbet which was nice and light for a lunch dessert.
The atmosphere was nothing special but very ‘school appropriate’ and its all about the food anyways, right? I liked that they were cooking seasonally and everything seemed really fresh.
Overall it was a fun lunch and interesting to see the Sale Lake City Art Institute at work. What a fabulous thing that Salt Lake has such a great culinary institute right at our back door. I can’t help but hope that there is a bright future for the culinary arts in Utah!
