Local Salt Lake Christmas Food-Gift Ideas: Bakery Edition

8 December 2010 By: Becky 2 Comments | Foodie Love, Life in the Valley

As my husband and I ponder about what to get friends and family for Christmas, we become more sensitive to how we spend money this time of year.  Our desire this year is to spend with local vendors in Salt Lake City, Utah:  restaurants, shops, etc.  We hope to give gifts that are not wasteful and full of love and care.  I came up with a list of a few bakeries and cafes in Salt Lake that have a great selection of things to choose from that would make delicious presents! I hope that you too will find some local businesses to support during this gift giving season!

I can imagine that opening a box with several kouing aman pastries from Les Madelienes would be a dream come true to many.  Les Madeleines is famous for their kouing aman pastry, literally, they’ve been on the Food Network for it. It is simply layers of buttery, flaky pastry with a crusty sweet exterior, making for the perfect pastry.  And you can ship it!  What a fun gift, to give someone a delicious holiday breakfast so they can relax and enjoy each others company!   Or if you’re not into pastries, their Cardamom Shortbread Cookies are mighty tasty and festive.

At Tulie Bakery, you may order a small cake or several lemon tartlets for a lovely gift.  All of their desserts are exceptionally classy and would make beautiful gifts.

Gourmandise downtown, has an abundant selection of treats to give.  They have a few new items this year that are especially festive for the holiday season.  Their Croquembouche is stacked high will filled cream puffs, and would be a great Christmas dessert to bring to the family.  It even resembles a Christmas tree.  They are also selling Red Velvet and Chocolate Decadence Bouchee de Gateau (Cake Bites) that are decorated for the holidays.  Fill a few boxes with these and your friends will love you.

An last but not least, another idea would be to pick up a box filled with an assortment of cookies from Ruby Snap (formerly My Dough Girl). Her cookies are out-of-this-world good and come in a variety of unique flavors, sure to satisfy the whole family.  My personal favorites, are:

Audrey- Almond Dough full of almonds, cranberries, and white chocolate
Betty- Oatmeal cookie with Mediterranean apricots and Montmorency cherries
Frida- Dark chocolate cookie with grilled chile d’arbol

The best thing about giving food gifts, is that you know you’re giving something that won’t just add to the clutter that sometimes we receive over the holidays.  Plus who doesn’t like a gourmet sweet treat, right?!
