Da Hotdog King Is Seriously Good Eats

18 March 2011 By: Kevin No Comment | Editor's Picks, Restaurant Reviews, featured

One of the newest sidewalk vendors to pop up on the streets of downtown Salt Lake is Da Hotdog King. Much like the ubiquitous hot dog vendors in larger cities like New York and Chicago, Da Hotdog King delivers a tasty snack or a quick lunch, of the grilled meat variety. However, this hot dog cart offers much more than a boiled dog in a steamed bun.

Troy, the owner of Da Hotdog King, originally hails from the South. He currently runs similar hot dog carts in Atlanta and Chicago, the latter city being where he created his signature Chicago hot dog. Troy moved to Salt Lake City a little over a year ago and decided to bring his unique dogs to the streets of our city by opening his first cart last fall.

Da Hotdog King currently offers 9 varieties of hot dogs and sausages. For my first order, I decided to go with the signature Chicago. This all-beef hot dog is grilled and comes in a poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, green relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices, sport peppers and celery salt. It was as good as it sounds and definitely authentic.

For my second course I chose the Kilby. Again, this is an all-beef grilled hot dog, but in a plain white bun topped with honey maple bacon, raspberry chipotle BBQ sauce, grilled onions and coconut mustard. Wow – what a combination – sweet and a little spicy with amazing maple bacon.

Troy also hooked me up with a free sample of his newest creation, the Dessert Hotdog. This craziness is a standard hot dog in a white bun with caramel raspberry chipotle BBQ sauce and tequila infused strawberry creme sauce. If you’ve ever wanted some meat with your dessert, you gotta try this one.

Da Hotdog King is located on 400 South and Main Street, on the southwest corner. There is plenty of parking on 4th South between Main and West Temple. Troy is usually serving during lunch hours, from 11am – 3pm. All hot dogs are $3.50 or two for $6. There is also a hot dog, chips and drink lunch combo for only $4. Veggies dogs can also be substituted on any order.

Troy also moves his cart to other locations occasionally. He operates at Kilby court on select evenings, and you can also find him at Club Jam (751 N 300 W) on the weekends until 2am. This is a gay club, and if that isn’t your scene, you can get in free just to purchase hot dogs if you have a late-night craving.

Basically, you have you try some of these hot dogs and chat with Troy. He is extremely friendly and will keep you entertained with great stories long after you finish your hot dog.
